Posted for Overstand

Overstand sent me this by PM and wanted me to post this here:

I graduated college in December and I've been working for an insurance broker. It's only been a few months and I'm just about ready to shoot myself, so I've been doing research into joining the military.

I looked into OCS first and I've decided I'd rather enlist. My reasons are that I'm young, single and money is not that important to me at this point in my life; I want the adventure and physical challenge. If I went through OCS, I could end up with a MOS that I hate, in which case I'd be no better off than I am now and making quite a bit less money to boot. I could always go through OCS after my first enlistment, and I think there is something to be said for an officer who started as a grunt.

I have it narrowed down to the Marines or Army, where I'd be interested in Recon/Rangers respectively. I've spoken to a recruiter for both and they've assured me it would be no problem to get an Option 40 Ranger contract or a UZ Recon contract. I am currently leaning towards Marine Recon.

So my questions are:

1) Am I crazy for doing this?

2) How can I get in shape? In my avatar pic I'm about 230. I've been dropping weight for the last 2 months and I'm sitting around 205. I plan to continue dropping until I'm around 175 or so.

I can do 100 pushups, 20 pull ups and 100 sit ups, but my run time is not good at all. I've been slowly building up my cardio, but I just quit smoking so I'm starting at practically ground zero. I'm considering dropping weight training all together.

I probably sound like a total dipshit, but if you or any of the guys on here could help me out with a routine to get in shape quickly I would greatly appreciate it. I know Basic + SOI would be about 5 months, do you think that is enough time to get into good enough shape to make Recon? I want to get out of this corporate office as soon as possible, but I don't want to go unless I have a legitimate shot at reaching my goals.

Thank you for reading. Any other advice/insight is greatly appreciated.

He had a follow up of basically a Marine recruiter being a prick about giving him a contract for his chosen MOS (or whatever Marines call it) and giving him the run-around and vacillating between Rangers and Marine Recon.

Random Drug Testing and Jack3d

Just got a memo yesterday from on high (Air Force) stating that Jack3d "will" cause a positive reading on a urinalysis test for methamphetamine.

According to USP labs, this is not true.

Nonetheless, as a JAG who has prosecuted many an airman for positive UAs, I know what is at stake. Since I use Jack3d 5 days a week (3 scoops before every workout), I plan to buy a meth test kit and see what it shows. I'll let you all know what I find out. The kit isn't 100% reliable, but it will be some evidence one way or the other.

Note, the memo did not "order" airmen not to use Jack3d (as was recently the case with Spice).

Any of you come across this? How about those in the other services?

Best Ranger Competition

Just finished about an hour and a half ago. Team #38 is from my Battalion- started the final Buddy Run in 5th place, but came in 11th on the Run...hoping they finish Top 8 at least. They won't announce the winners until following the Super-Supper; had to take off. Awards ceremony is tomorrow at 10am.

It is really cool to watch if you ever get the chance- once in awhile they'll put it on ESPN at 2 or 3 a.m. when they've run out of motorcross or bowling events to air.

http://www.bestrangercompetiti...

I competed MANY years ago ('94) but DNF; my partner fractured his kneecap on the Darby Queen. Back then it was either Ranger Regiment or Ranger Training Brigade that had a stranglehold on 1st Place. Great to see so many units across the Army compete and win now- I've even seen USAF and USMC teams compete.

I was asked by someone through PM if we could start explaining what many of the terms and acronyms mean for military members. I am assuming terms like "gunner" or "OTS" are what he is referring to.

So if any of you can come up with some and explain what they mean, let's make this thread for those who don't understand what the fuck we are talking about.

Starting:

COT:
Commissioned Officers Training

This is the term used in the AirForce. I am not sure about the other branches, but it refers to people who are coming into the military as officers and describes that form of "basic training". This is different than regular basic that the enlisted are drafted into.

I have a Question about Recon...

I have gotten a few PM's lately with questions regarding recon mainly whether I have any pointers about what to do during indoc etc. Hopefully this post will answer any and all questions thus having me to type, cut, paste, edit a bunch of pm's.

1. If your trying to pass the indoc or board or are already in recon, don't walk around with an air of elitism. You are merely playing a supportive role for the infantry where the "rubber meets the road". The staff NCO's hate that attitude anyways.

2. Before you even start entertaining thoughts of recon, sign up for the infantry, the grunts. This allows you to develop some base knowledge of basic operations (patroling, IA drills etc.) You need to learn to walk before you can run.

3. When you're in the rear or anywhere else for that matter, politicking is important. Create the perception that you are a lifer.. even if you're not. They don't want to invest a bunch of money in some jarhead that's going to eas a few months after graduating Ranger school. Don't do anything that can be construed as unconventional or un Marine like.

4. When taking the indoc, don't quit... period. They're going to try to get inside your head by putting you in a stressfull situation in which you have no idea as to when it might end. Just prepare yourself mentally that you accept anything that comes your way.

When I think of more I post it. Good luck to those of you that are interested.

I figured we could use a place where we can find others in our respective fields, and where anyone can ask questions about eachother's jobs. I often get "You're EOD? Why do y'all always take so damn long?". Really, this can be for anything MOS related.
If you weren't in a fraternity, the best way I can explain this bond is that it's the same bond I felt with the closest friends I had in boot camp. So I'd appreciate not hearing any negative comments about this, although I don't expect any from this crowd.

He'll be coming in as an Ensign in another 2 years or so, and well, my knowledge on naval tradition is slightly lacking and I wanted to see if there was any specific items a naval officer would particularly love having. The boots I had before these were the Nike SFB's for about 1 year 7 months.

Weight: Pretty light, just about the same as the Nike SFB's

Tread: Better than the SFB's but the soles aren't as flexible. They seem to be made of a bit tougher material. I've only had these a month so time will tell

Comfort: Not as comfortable out of the box as the SFB's were but I definitely like the lacing system better, the bottom laces stay tight, while the upper laces are like the upper laces of the SFB's. The top of the heel cup on the C4's were bothering me a bit the first 2 weeks, especially if I happened to wear a thin pair of socks that day.

Breathability: About the same as the Nike SFB's

For all those that are Boat guys. I thought i would share a theory with you.

Before my buddy and I tried for selection. We both heard how hard driving a RHIB at high rates of speed through sea state are on the human body. Stories of compressed discs, compression fractures, blown knees from the intensity of such an occupation. I think some one told me its like getting into over 500 car crashes in one night. Three years in the job... I completely agree.
So we made a vow to train right, from the beginning. We figured that waves that hit these boats are relentless. And to put a marathon runner against a 33 foot linebacker is just plain retarded. We needed lean mass and a lot of strength.

We believed that Deadlifts where the ultimate lift. Due to the spinal load and the obvious strength and mass benefits. We trained at least once a week in deadlift. We both passed selection and our course. And unfortunately, recently my buddy took a really hard hit and compression fractured a vertebrae in his lower back. Most guys with this injury are out of the game for a while, sometimes surgery, sometimes out for good. Well on the bright side. He wore a back brace for about 3 months, no surgery and is about to rejoin us.

I passed by him a short time back and asked him how rehab was going. "Im about to go do some light deadlifts, doc cleared me" In my mind I was dumbfounded but he assured me that not only did he and the medical staff believe that his back muscle were so strong they stabilized his spine that his recovery is fast forwarded with less pain associated with such an injury.

One new exercise we have added to our deadlift day is Hack squats. Now some of you may think this is a bad idea. But hear me out. When we drive, our backs are supported by a bolster we kinda lean back on. Now when you are in a sea state where you hit constant chop it will be like doing 1000 drop squats in a day. And Im not really exaggerating. So we put only a forty five a side. We will start doing quarter squats at medium tempo, then increasing to full squats to jumping squats. (Disclaimer: This is what I do, not necessarily is it what you should do.) Its a great finisher and completely mimics the conditions you will feel on the boat.

Food for thought.

College Student Deciding Between Air and Army National Guard

recieved this in a PM, posting it on here for him.

Im 21, have 2 1/2 years of chicago city college under my belt and just finished a semester. I want to continue my education at the university level and get an exercise science degree. So I've decided that joining the military would be a great option to choose in helping me achieve that. I've been familiarizing myself with the military lifestyle mostly from about.com. My dad is a Marine Corps Gunny and still serving, suggested to me that one of the national guards(he proposes Air National Guard in specific) would be good for me, being I want to continue school.

He also prefer that I go for ROTC training when at school, hence become an officer. A big concern for me is that in being an officer, Im sure that I will be required to carry more responsibilities, which will consume more of my time, but most importantly if Im positioned in a job for something I dont like, then I imagine it would be so fucking agonizing working, whereas It would be less stressful being an enlisted personnel, with less shit expected of me.

This may come off as a bit distasteful/lazy to readers, but Im just trying to be dedicated to the truth. If I'm Doing something I like, its going to be difficult for someone else to work harder than me in that profession, I hate to half-ass things, I want to give it my all by working on something I like and grow from the experience considerably because of my positive/determined attitude I carried throughout the work to learn more and more. The joint exercise division caught my interest on the national guard website: http://www.ng.mil/...te/default.aspx

If anyone has experience with the joint exercise division or knows a little bit about, it would be awesome if you could fill me in how the job is.
Overall, I'd greatly appreciate viewpoints on this entire topic.

Much Thanks, Vince

From Wikipedia:

"Hetherington was killed while covering the front lines in the besieged city of Misrata, Libya. There appears to be uncertainty whether he was killed by a mortar shell[13] or an RPG[14] round. The same attack also killed photographer Chris Hondros and gravely wounded photographer Guy Martin. A source said that the group was travelling with rebel fighters.[14] Hetherington tweeted the previous day, "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO".[15][16][17][18][19] Hetherington is survived by his mother, father, sister, brother and three nieces and nephews.[20]"

Horsemen Training Program

I recently came across a new(to me) training program called The Horsemen. If you google it, you will find other programs using the same or similar title, but this one is different.

I googled extensively and could not find it anywhere, but perhaps my Google is not as strong as others.

Anyway, the program was developed by a group of Team guys calling themselves the Horsemen. Their training philosophy is simple: Team guys are not bodybuilders, nor are they powerlifters, Olympic lifters, or mountain climbers, and they should not train as one of these. They do, however, require a slightly lower elite level of competence in all of these, so they developed the Horsemen Program. It draws from Crossfit, Mountain Athlete, Gym Jones, Dan John, and API (Scott Ramsdell, not Mark Verstegen, though Military Athlete borrows from Verstegen, so indirectly, whatever).

It is designed for the operator, someone who operates in extreme environments, who needs to throw some weight around and still be able to sprint to an HLZ. The goals of the program are: DL 2.5xBW, Front Squat 1.5xBW, Bench 1.5xBW, Military Press 1xBW, and still be able to run 3 miles easily in under 20:00. I am starting from a fairly detrained state, so this should be interesting.

Has anyone else heard of this, or have personal experience with it? I copied it from a guy at work, and had to retype it because the copy was shitty. I did the first strength workout today, called Tongue Lashing(except benching instead of standing press), and it sucked. In a good way.

Navy Removes Commanders of Ship Near Libya

Wow...they're dropping them left and right. It's as though being in command is detrimental to one's career. Both the CO and CMC were relieved, so how was the XO spared in all of this? Interestingly, CAPT Dan Shaffer, who will serve until the next commanding officer reports to the ship, was the CHENG while I was on the USS ENTERPRISE...back when CAPT Owen P. Honors was the XO.

http://www.foxnews.com/...ers-uss-stout/#

The Navy announced Tuesday that it was relieving both the commanding officer and the command master chief of the Norfolk-based USS Stout â?? one of the Navy destroyers stationed in the Mediterranean and poised to respond if needed to developments in Libya.

Cmdr. Nathan Borchers and Master Chief Susan Bruce-Ross were relieved due to what the Navy termed a "loss of confidence" in their ability lead.

A Navy official told Fox News that Borchers failed to properly oversee members of his ship who were apparently involved in misconduct while in ports at various locations in Europe. The use of alcohol and fraternization were issues during these port visits, the official said. The relief of Borchers followed an investigation into multiple allegations of crew misconduct.

The military did not elaborate on what kind of misconduct was identified.

"We hold our leaders to a high standard. Our nation expects no less and our sailors deserve no less," said Vice Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander, U.S. 6th Fleet.

Stout is currently commanded by Capt. Dan Shaffer, commander, task force 65, who will serve until the next commanding officer reports to the ship. Master Chief Jay Wood has taken over the duties as Stout's command master chief until a relief arrives on board.

Additionally, one officer, five chiefs and one petty officer were removed from the ship following non-judicial punishment proceedings for misconduct during incidents that occurred while on liberty ashore. Offenses included fraternization, orders violations and disregard for naval standards of conduct and behavior which contributed to poor crew morale and a hostile command climate.

Another chief was removed from the ship for further legal proceedings.

Last Living US WWI Vet Dies at Age 110

http://www.foxnews.com/...10/?test=faces#

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. â?? He was repeatedly rejected by military recruiters and got into uniform at 16 after lying about his age. But Frank Buckles would later become the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I.

Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in Charles Town, biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. He was 110.

Buckles had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of the Great War in the nation's capital.

When asked in February 2008 how it felt to be the last of his kind, he said simply, "I realized that somebody had to be, and it was me." And he told The Associated Press he would have done it all over again, "without a doubt."

On Nov. 11, 2008, the 90th anniversary of the end of the war, Buckles attended a ceremony at the grave of World War I Gen. John Pershing in Arlington National Cemetery.

He was back in Washington a year later to endorse a proposal to rededicate the existing World War I memorial on the National Mall as the official National World War I Memorial. He told a Senate panel it was "an excellent idea." The memorial was originally built to honor District of Columbia's war dead.

Born in Missouri in 1901 and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles visited a string of military recruiters after the United States entered the "war to end all wars" in April 1917. He was repeatedly rejected before convincing an Army captain he was 18. He was actually 16 1/2.

"A boy of (that age), he's not afraid of anything. He wants to get in there," Buckles said.

Details for services and arrangements will be announced later this week. The family asks that donations be made to the National World War One Legacy Project. The project is managed by the nonprofit Survivor Quest and will educate students about Buckles and WWI through a documentary and traveling educational exhibition.

More than 4.7 million people joined the U.S. military from 1917-18. As of spring 2007, only three were still alive, according to a tally by the Department of Veterans Affairs: Buckles, J. Russell Coffey of Ohio and Harry Richard Landis of Florida.

The dwindling roster prompted a flurry of public interest, and Buckles went to Washington in May 2007 to serve as grand marshal of the national Memorial Day parade.

Coffey died Dec. 20, 2007, at age 109, while Landis died Feb. 4, 2008, at 108. Unlike Buckles, those two men were still in basic training in the United States when the war ended and did not make it overseas.

The last known Canadian veteran of the war, John Babcock of Spokane, Wash., died in February 2010.

There are no French or German veterans of the war left alive.

Buckles served in England and France, working mainly as a driver and a warehouse clerk. The fact he did not see combat didn't diminish his service, he said: "Didn't I make every effort?"

An eager student of culture and language, he used his off-duty hours to learn German, visit cathedrals, museums and tombs, and bicycle in the French countryside.

After Armistice Day, Buckles helped return prisoners of war to Germany. He returned to the United States in January 1920.

Buckles returned to Oklahoma for a while, then moved to Canada, where he worked a series of jobs before heading for New York City. There, he again took advantage of free museums, worked out at the YMCA, and landed jobs in banking and advertising.

But it was the shipping industry that suited him best, and he worked around the world for the White Star Line Steamship Co. and W.R. Grace & Co.

In 1941, while on business in the Philippines, Buckles was captured by the Japanese. He spent more than three years in prison camps.

"I was never actually looking for adventure," Buckles once said. "It just came to me."

He married in 1946 and moved to his farm in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle in 1954, where he and wife Audrey raised their daughter, Susannah Flanagan. Audrey Buckles died in 1999.

In spring 2007, Buckles told the AP of the trouble he went through to get into the military.

"I went to the state fair up in Wichita, Kansas, and while there, went to the recruiting station for the Marine Corps," he said. "The nice Marine sergeant said I was too young when I gave my age as 18, said I had to be 21."

Buckles returned a week later.

"I went back to the recruiting sergeant, and this time I was 21," he said with a grin. "I passed the inspection ... but he told me I just wasn't heavy enough."

Then he tried the Navy, whose recruiter told Buckles he was flat-footed.

Buckles wouldn't quit. In Oklahoma City, an Army captain demanded a birth certificate.

"I told him birth certificates were not made in Missouri when I was born, that the record was in a family Bible. I said, 'You don't want me to bring the family Bible down, do you?'" Buckles said with a laugh. "He said, 'OK, we'll take you.'"

He enlisted Aug. 14, 1917, serial number 15577.

I'm extremely surprised that this hasn't been brought up yet, but what do you think?

I, for one, don't give a shit. I don't think it's going to change anything too much, except maybe in a few combat units. And that's only in the (I'm assuming) rare occasion that a gay service member is really open and out about it.

The one thing that does bother me about it is the housing issue. With the current rules straight service members aren't allowed to have the opposite sex spend the night or stay for any length of time in their barracks/dorms/housing. How will that affect the gays? Do you think some kind of similar rule will be put in place for that situation?

Now, despite what some might think, I guarantee that anyone that has served long enough to get through Basic and Tech School (or whatever you other guys call it) has served with a gay/lesbian service member.

My point is this: It's almost 2011. Who cares anymore? Except for the aforementioned housing/cohabitaion thing, does it really matter who you fuck anymore?

I thought it'd be fun to start a thread where everyone can post pics of themselves in uniform, current or former. :D I'd love to see what some of you guys look like in your uniforms- especially you Marine Corps dress blues-wearing folks. ;) But all uniforms are welcome, wear them proud!

This is my boot camp pic from the summer of 1999, when I was 18. I don't know what I was thinking with those eyebrows...

Col. Frank Zachar - Commander of 172nd Infantry Brigade Relieved of Command

The Army has relieved the commander of the 172nd Infantry Brigade, shortly before the unit intensifies its training for an Afghanistan deployment this summer.

Acting V Corps commander Brig. Gen. Allen W. Batschelet said Tuesday that Col. Frank Zachar was relieved of command on Monday, â??â?¦ due to loss of confidence in his ability to command.â??

Batschelet said there was no specific incident that led the Army to relieve Zachar.

â??There werenâ??t any illegal, immoral or unethical activities,â?? he said. â??His (Zacharâ??s) leadership style wasnâ??t really effective and over time the command here lost confidence in his ability to command.â??

Deciding to Get Out

After much agonizing, I have decided to seperate from active duty. A couple of years ago I wanted to make a career of serving, but I've hit my wall.

Luckily I did not get the guilt trip I expected. Additionally despite Stop-Loss ending, many commander's are not releasing people from theatre.

I wanted to make a topic for any people seperating or going through the process to share stories or suggestions to make the transition easier.
