yeah, missing maschy. and nadia, cal, nimain, MOM...

but we are still here - right??

front squat max tested to be 50kg.

still need to test back squat max...

hurt my leg... skipping... usually i skip a bit then foam roll calves a bit... then skip a bit more... didn't have a roller the other day, though, so just rested without rolling. got this weird cramping pain sensation in my left achilles. think it has cramped up and torn a bit or something. stabby pain when i bear weight on left leg and when i dorsiflex my left ankle. bizarre. hope it heals up soon.

week off classes for mid-trimester break apparently. cool. they probably should be marketing it as 'study break' but whatever. i've started working a little on my thesis... life is good... even though it is getting colder...

think i'm going to bail in the bjj. mostly because i think it is more mma fighter play time than structured classes and i think some of the guys are staying away rather than risking awkwardness about rolling with me. there were some younger guys anyway... then they vanished... i was basically only rolling with one guy all the time who had only been learning for 4 months... i'll enroll in a proper beginners level gi class when i get the chance... but i want to focus on lifting for now, i think. i think... thats the right thing for me to do...

still working on balance between:
training with self / training with others
doing what i think i should / doing what others think i should
i guess that is the story of most people's lives though lol.
just maybe a bit harder for me because of my need for alone time / space.

i've realized i'm only properly creative / i only properly do what some calm place in me knows i should do when i feel a proper sense of space. when i don't feel self conscious. i think i might have lost that at my current gym. might be time to feel out yoga gym again. not because it is ever entirely empty but because i feel better able to entirely ignore everyone there without people who i need to socialize with outside the gym taking offense...

i promised myself i wouldn't post until i'd done some bloody work:

SNATCH - singles to max. got 40kg for a nice single. 3 misses @42.5kg. I've got it in me, I can tell. Just need some RAWR!!

CLEAN AND JERK - going through angst re: full clean (weaker) vs power clean (stronger) and also squat jerk (weaker) vs power jerk. did some of all of those. also did some split jerks today since my feet seemed okay with these (comparatively strong considering i never train them). maybe i can train them a little...

ONE ARMED SNATCHES / POWER SNATCHES - I want to master these. Think I need to work on shoulder / thoracic flexibility. Can't quite get my arm straight above me in the bottom of a squat.

FRONT SQUAT - 5/3/1 week 1 day 1.
max tested @50kg (fairly disappointingly) last week - so plugged in 45kg)

1x5@ 30kg
1x5@ 32.5kg
1x5+@ 37.5kg (got 10)

then BBB ASSISTANCE 5x10@15kg (33%)

then 20 minutes fartlek intervals on the SPIN BIKE

fuck yeah!

(my above rant was NOT directed at anybody here. i'm so sorry for confusion on that :-(
it was entirely about me going fucking batty that i don't have a 'me time' training space anymore. also that i don't have all fucking day to potter about in it. holidays at the moment (study week) and so i'm right back into it. need to figure a way to keep the momentum going during the semester... for my own sanity (and for all you guys) obviously).

thanks for putting up with me. upper body circuit style thingimie tomorrow!!!

if i spend some time doing some work... i'll reward myself with abs and headstands this evening...

aw.

quads are PISSY today after the BBB assistance yesterday...

calf / achilles is still cranky after the skipping / cramping weirdness last week...

went to snatch to max and 3 misses @40kg. disappointing. thought i'd get to battle the 42.5kg again...
had the gym to myself which was amazing, but heart not in it. ankles kinda cranky, too... blister... wah. poor me.

did some chores and back in the afternoon...

planned on doing a circuit-like thing like this:

chin up 5x1 (these really have regressed)
push up 2x5
press 2x5
row 2x5

whole thing x5...

only i didn't. 15 chins (total) and everything else only did 4 runs through.

lesson: my body is seriously detrained from the basic strength stuff since i haven't been working it. i need to set aside one day each week to do this circuit. starting to formulate some kind of plan for myself... a weird-ass program for me to be getting on with.

tomorrow:

deadlifts. hells yeah!!

oh. i did a handstand fall back into a bridge. actually landed in a bridge and stayed there for the very first time! yay! balanced a handstand for a couple seconds, too.

did a heap of other stuff... gym ball balancing... one arm med ball throwing / catching...

headstands (balance getting better on these all the time)

and my latest trick: a sort of a jog balancing a 20kg strength (sand) bag on my head with no hands. can do corners and all. could be wrong but pretty sure it is helping strengthen my neck for head stands...

My achilles has been killing me for the past 2 weeks... so I found the old strassburg sock and used it for 2 nights, and voila... achilles is all good again! I strongly suggest strassburg socks for those with ankle/achilles problems.

aw bird, i was hoping you might outgrow them and send them my way. i still haven't brought one / got around to making one...

up... i think most of those adventures have come and gone. not terribly sure what i'm up to these days.

on a bit of a mission to find myself / train by myself / find people who i can train alongside productively by myself. or something...

2 days later and i've still got major DOMS in quads, ass, and adductors from the BBB assistance front squats (since i'm not used to such high reps / volume).

got some fairly serious DOMS in my lats today, too, from the chin ups - it must be.

i'm feeling awful today / yesterday. worst that time of the month for months... if not over a year, actually.

back is feeling tetchy in a strange (for me) place a little higher up than the place that usually gives me grief. i remember Cal (cries!!) saying about how bloating can compress the disks. think it might be some of that. so decided to not deadlift. yet.

been doing mobility / stretching stuffs. rolling around on the ball. on a mission to go from all fours to seated no hands and back again without needing to touch down. i can!! i'll take a vid because i'm feeling all special about that right now!! i can balance on one knee no hands too!

the things that amuse me. sigh. still, just as well, really.

did abs today. properly. lying face down. drawing in belly button so stomach comes off the ground. even mine. today realization: if i don't stop 'bulking' i'm actually on my way into turning into a fat ass. seriously. time to stop kidding myself. i'm outgrowing my clothes and i can grab flab. done with bulking - i want abs now. dammit.

to start with could hardly do it. eventually could. then remembered something one of the tutors cued me to that actually seems to work 100% - i need to activate my glutes instead of activating my lower back. so... glute activation. yeah baby. that is it exactly. can feel my lower back (where it tends to get overuse injury) relax as the glutes pick up the load.

i really need to remember that for always. and figure out some weirdness i've got going on now with activating abs and glutes at the same time (why is that hard?) and also (when standing) keeping my knees unlocked when i activate my glutes.

Alexus, are you still in Australia? Glenn Pendlay is going to be there and is putting on a seminar with Donny Shankle. I went to his seminar in California and it was great so I'd recommend it.

Oh Lexi, I think maybe that wasn't the right gym for you. MMA gyms always have a different vibe. I'm glad you tried it though, maybe one day you'll find a place that clicks with you.

god dammit outskilled by a 9 year old!!

not in aussie anymore, in kiwiland now...

pch - i hope to do a class properly one day. this wasn't really structured classes, though... but it did show me that i really would enjoy structured classes. i see it properly in my future once my finances are more sorted out.

today -- week 2 of 5/3/1 front squats.

um... not exactly one week later, but i've had a couple days since last time. i think it will work alright like that?? time will tell, i guess.

1x3@70 30kg
1x3@80 35kg
1x3+@90 40kg (got 5 not tooooo much hard work)

5x10@20kg.

oh. i just realized that my assistance increased by 5kg (not trivial at those weights!) because i didn't have the women's bar... uh... it felt alright, actually. think my system is adapting to this 10 rep idea.

__

i don't understand what is meant with the +. i get going to failure. i get trying to stop just short of failure. i don't get leaving 'one or two in the tank'. no comprehension of what that means at all...

thats what i've been trying to do. except not the standing on it thing - but i should do that. if my ankles are up to it / can learn to be up to it.

that one is for you pch. i kind of independently came up with the idea... but of course it is obvious once you think of it...

got to the deload of 5/3/1 front squats. resetting maxes next time (2.5kg increase). enjoying it okay.

reading:

http://www.scribd.com/...nosaur-Training

it is really speaking to me. about training alone so that you can concentrate. about heavy singles being worthwhile. about volume being worthwhile. just a bunch of stuff fitting together around the central themes of CONCENTRATION and GIVING EVERY SINGLE REP EVERYTHING YOU HAVE GOT.

just wrote out 5/3/1 for bench and will start that tomorrow. oddly enough my max bench seems to be the same as my max front squat so easy enough to run my last months numbers with bench lolz.

do people really do 5/3/1 for deadlift?

dinosaur training...

when you lift a body in wrestling or martial arts... when you lift a heavy rock... your back will round. dinosaurs have strong backs so they can lift with a rounded back safely.

everything i thought i knew...

i think i might have gone to the extreme re: your lumbar back will always be one of the first areas to overtrain since there is less muscle mass so basically... leave it the hell alone. i think it might well be time for me to train some deadlifts more frequently. maxed at 95kg the other day. lifted it for 4 singles though so have more in me. i bet i could do two plates but i freak out about back rounding (which i probably don't need to since i'm so anteriorly tilted i don't think i could actually round if i tried).

hmm.

5/3/1 ftw. people have only been saying that for...

years.

lol.
