BX2VA: Lee, you've got me thinking now. So are you saying that it may not be necessary to train for max strength in horizontal pushes? I just assumed that someone training for strength was obligated to train all planes. I aslo don't want a bird chest, but I can train hypertrophy to handle that and not worry about max strength, I guess.

JRT6: I purchased a 140lb weight vest and that is all the load I need to challenge my push-ups. I use the perfect pushup handles on cement blocks, feet elevated to make me level, to get the depth.

Lee Boyce: @BX2VA: As for question 2, I've heard of that too. Muscle balance is pretty subjective. People may think that if you deadlift 300 you should be able to press 225. Others think that simple "good posture" is an indicator of good muscle balance (from front to back). In my opinion, most people I've met have never had a chest that was "too loose", so avoiding copious amounts of heavy bench won't harm their quest for better posture, shoudler health, and upper back strength.
