There's an old saying about those who forget history. I don't remember it, but it's good.—Stephen Colbert

"History doesn't repeat itself - at best it sometimes rhymes"
You may want to credit Mr. Twain when paraphrasing him.

I didn't know it was originally from Twain; I came up with that myself, or so I thought.

Those who forget history are destined to repeat it. Is this correct?

The actual quote is:

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
~ George Santayana

Another great quote is:

"We have the need of history, not to fall back on, but to see if we can escape it."
~ Ortega Y Gasset

In either case, it is a reminder that we must be vigilant and remember the errors of the past.

The effort to record and maintain history as a factual chronology must never falter, lest we be deceived by those who wish to influence us by a distortion of historical truth.

What technological advancements have been lost because of the decimation of nations and their history? At the very least, forgotten/destroyed historical artifacts or ideas could have given birth to modern theoretical practice, leading to productive outcomes.

I find it amazing (and sad) that even modern technology lacks the ability to re-create select antiquated structures.

Xerxes: There will be no glory in your sacrifice. I will erase even the memory of Sparta from the histories! Every piece of Greek parchment shall be burned. Every Greek historian, and every scribe shall have their eyes pulled out, and their tongues cut from their mouths. Why, uttering the very name of Sparta, or Leonidas, will be punishable by death! The world will never know you existed at all!

King Leonidas: The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed.

Jesus Christ. You're going to back up your point with a quote from an extremely historically inaccurate movie? Come on. I get your point, but to say that the victors write history is too simplistic. Yes, in many cases the victors ruined the existing historical records of the conquered, but in many other cases the conquerors specifically aimed to preserve the cultural history of a region. Stop getting your history lessons from movies.

The movie quotes are nothing but fun.

I have laid tracks in modern history and sat at tables with world leaders. That is my foundation for many of my thoughts and opinion.
By what I presented above, I don't blame you for the reprimand. With the void so evident in internet conversations, an assumption could be made that I am nothing but a juvenile behind a keyboard. Not the case here my friend.

I find appealing to or appeasing someone who would have made the same statement regardless of my screenname/moniker, futile.
I do not re-invent myself or find the need to lie satisfying in anyway. My genitalia and ego remain the same size and intact. Visit my hub and if you find character within yourself, then I should expect an apology and the respect I would have given you - regardless of your background. Some of us have left the confines of our house and put foot-to-ass.
I initially felt the need to tell you to fuck off but I will wish you a sincere - good day.

I dunno, this whole quote does not apply any more.

In order to forget history you must first have at least looked into it.

"Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary."

"And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed-if all records told the same tale-then the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'"

- George Orwell, 1984

The problem in America is that so many don't even know history. And my saying so doesn't mean I am an elitists from from it, just a regular smoe who didn't learn something about the 20's and 30's in America. Then we had a concentration of wealth, just like today ( maybe worst today,) and the republican or conservative answer was to hold back on spending. John Maynard Keynes came along and saw that we needed to stimulate the economy and that government could do that. There is such a thing in economic theory as the multiplier effect and that when we help people who need help they go out and buy because they have needs, that buying is a good thing since it helps to create jobs. Of course a problem now is cheap labor all over he world, but still its pretty solid thinking that giving or helping those who need it will stimulate the economy.
I also find that the republicans have nothing to add to solve our economic problems. Trickle down theory started by Reagan is a failure, if it was so effective with the concentration of wealth that we have in America surely there would be far fewer problems than what we see, people without work, people losing their houses, people paying for going broke trying to pay for medicines they need or operations. The democrates on the other hand ignore the history of T.Roosevelt who stood up to the wealthy and taxed them at 90% and they still did well. The current bunch of dems are warmed over republicans. There are a handful that are very thoughtful one comes to mind is B. Sanders from Vermont but actually he is an independent. anyway we have big problems and lack honesty to say what faces us all if we don't start to solve these problems. It might be that more and more people agree with the "we are the 99, that capitalism isn't delivering the goods anymore, and it needs more Government involvement more economic planning to keep our ship sailing onwards without killing ourselves with more greenhouse gases.
