Meet Write-up

BLUF: Hit 502 in the squat, 336 in the bench and 601 in the deadlift for a total of 1439. Won best lifter. 50lbs more than my previous total. Set 2 state records in the squat, 2 state records in the bench, and 1 state record in the deadlift. Set 4 American records (deadlift for 181 open and intermediate, total for 181 open and intermediate).

Notes: Everything felt heavy today, most likely due to the weight cut. I'm very happy with my performance, but definitely done at this weight class.

Got every attempt. Might've had another 5lbs, but these were a ball buster. First time I ever hit a 500lb squat in competition, after failing it twice in my past 2 meets.

Missed the final dead. I most likely could have hit 616 as a second attempt, but I gave the 601 my all and had nothing left in me for the final attempt.

Solid lifting at any weight, you'll be hitting 1500+ very soon (and then 1600, 1700...)

I was following Wendler's 5/3/1 BBB with some modifications. For squat and dead, I am training ROM progression with chain suspended squats and mat pulls with deads. I really fucked my hamstring up training in my garage in below freezing temps, so this is what I needed to do to still train heavy.

Additionally, I am doing at minimal DOUBLE the pulling volume for all upper body pulls. I was doing 10 sets of 10 for DB rows, and 10 sets of 10 for chins along with one all out set of max rep chins with rest pauses at the start of my workouts (averaging in the 40s)

Really inspiring performances! Thanks for posting your videos. I'm looking to try my first powerlifting meet some day soon. This gives me a benchmark for what I can strive to achieve. Some questions please:
-What is your usual walk-around weight?
-Why the specific weight cut to 181 lbs. for this meet?
-How tall are you?
-How much time did you get between weigh-ins and your first lift attempt?

Around meet time, I was walking around at 188-190. I was 202lbs in September and started a slow, gradual weight loss diet to get me down to that for the meet. I am now looking to build up to much higher than that.

I cut to 181 at this meet because I wanted to get the best coefficient I could, and also because I held some records at that weight class that I wanted to break even further. Also, I have a physical fitness test coming up, and being lighter for that pays off too, so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.

I am 5'9.

I had about 18 hours between weigh in and my first squat.

Physical fitness test - are you in the reserves or national guard? I don't know anyone outside of Army folk who use "BLUF" when writing. Thanks for answering my questions.

Thanks man.

This was a NASA meet.

I am 27 years old.

I have been "lifting" since I was 14, but spent my high school years doing the bench/curl thing, and about 2 years of college doing the same. I started actually strength training around age 19 and was juggling that and combat sports until I finally hung up my gloves at 21 and committed full time to lifting. I started powerlifting when I was 25, and did my first meet in April of 2011.

Congrats on a huge meet. Any plans to compete in the Laughlin meet next year? It would be pretty cool to see you and the rest of the top 181 lifters go head to head at that meet.

I actually don't even know what that meet is, but I am pretty much done at this weight class. I would rather make bigger increases on my total at the cost of my coefficient by gaining weight than spend years eeking out a few more pounds.

And I want to be huge, haha.

I definitely wouldn't cry myself to sleep if I ended up as a 220, but I'm basically going to ease off the breaks on my diet and see where my body ends up. I was still growing before I started restricting my diet to get down to 181, so I'm curious what will happen if I just keep upping the volume in my training and diet.

Laughlin is the NASA Nationals (IIRC) next year. It's just a bit away from Las Vegas. It's going to be a really big meet. Rich Peters is promoting it like no other.
