The Hormonal Side of Naked
by TC
04/12/10
It's not just Testosterone that makes you the dirty dog you are; almighty T has a whole cast of virtually unknown supporting hormone actors.

When I read the part with the appendage acting like a rudder, I almost choked to death from laughing.

As enticing as Brizendine's theories are, they're a little bit troubling because they seem to almost entirely eliminate personal responsibility.
And the theories don't even consider man's ability to reason or think. It's interesting to know where some of our primal urges come from, but hormones are such a small part of the bigger picture. Most of those things are just complete bullshit.
Like who would ever buy into a theory that kissing is a sampling of genetic information? I'm sure whether you have good breath and are a good kisser have nothing to do with anything...
And speaking of a girl tasting your genetic information, isn't there a beej joke in there somewhere?
And I hate hearing stuff about pheromones as well. "OMG no girl will ever like me because I don't produce enough andro!"
But despite my criticisms, it was a good read, and I enjoyed it. Thanks TC

hmmm...maybe the author was just saying that a particular cocktail of hormones makes you more likely to engage in a particular behavior.
And personal responsibility would mean making the correct choice in regards to whether to follow your hormonal instinct or to suppress it. Just my 2 cents.
Enjoyed reading the article.

I read her book the female brain a few years ago and as a result opted out of reading the male brain. The author all too often does jump to conclusions and assumes that we are entirely products of our genetic makeup and hormones. As far as the writer is concerned, humans have no real control over their actions because of our chemistry. She does not provide a great deal of scientific evidence and often goes off of anecdotal experience in her practice and people she has come across. Her writings do make for fairly interesting reads, but her thinking is very flawed and could lead to further propagation of untruth.
Yes, hormones and genetics do have a great influence on our actions, but they make up only a percentage of contributing factors that lead to behavior.

Excellent read, TC.
Your characterizations of King T and his supporting cast were illustrative and informative.

"Now I don't know how you were brought up but where I come from, if there's nobody around you take your pants off. That's just the way it is."
Probably the best TC line ever!!

"Maybe a hard-on is sometimes just a hard-on."
Thought the ending couldn't be better. Truly better right now than an ending I actually have to think about.

the circle was so precise, they could use it to compute pi to the hundredth decimal point.
Way to go TC! The wait was worth it. This is some fine literary crack!

Most of the comments here were positive, so it must just be me, but I felt this was largely a book review. Recently I spent some time going and reading the old Atomic Dog articles, and although this one is probably more mature, it isn't nearly as funny. I felt that way about some of the most recent articles too, the material in the article is largely something I agree with, but reading it is less enjoyable overall. No offense intended.
