Excellent interview. FYI, JB's precision nutrition is worth every penny.

Good article, but sound the alarms. InB4 shitstorm about plenty of TMUSCLE readers considering GSP's physique to be ideal.

Great article Berardi! Loved the last paragraph, should be an eye opener for a lot of people.

I can't get enough of Tate, Wendler, Dan John, and Berardi.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It was good fun doing the interview with Bryan. And, if the interest is there, I'd love to drop an article in from time to time. Any particular topics of interest?

On no, it's not starting already. ;-)

How about this as a clarification:

"Some TMUSCLE readers like GSP's physique. At 5'9, 200lbs, and single digit body fat, the guy is in great shape. And quite a few, but not all TMUSCLE readers, think that's groovy. If you don't, that's quite alright. Just don't pick a fight on the forums about it."

Maybe an article going in to the AT and PW meals and examples of combinations etc?

X2....more Dave Tate please, and it IS nice to see JB back. Like it's been said, more articles from him and from Lonnie Lowery would be appreciated.

Really enjoyed this article and more than anything, I enjoyed reading the no bullshit philosophy that was clearly coming through. I added... "They know what they should be doing, but making these little compromises gradually erodes excellence" to my little book of quotes. Beautifully stated.

I'll second Blackaggar's suggestion of more info on you AT and PW meals strategy.

John, I recall some time ago you were discussing genetic physiology/nutrition (I can't recall the exact name). I know you talked about it on both the 100th episode of The Fitcast, and did an interview on here where you talked to one of the leading researchers.

How about some follow up on that - if you did pursue that field any further?

As I said in the article, I rotate my protein powders to avoid what some think is a potential environmental cause of food intolerance.

I typically rotate between Metabolic Drive, Muscle Milk, and a host of other random protein powders, usually based on what my buddy at the local nutrition store can get for me.

My main selection criterion: a) good quality ingredients, b) awesome taste. Metabolic Drive and Muscle Milk both fit these criterion - big time. Truth be told, although I love the taste of them both, I think MM edges Metabolic Drive a little in pure, unadulterated tastiness.

But that doesn't matter so much as I typically build super-shakes out of a host of other tasty ingredients too. So, in these shakes, the difference between MM and Metabolic Drive is negligible in this context.

However, like I said, I don't have to choose between the two. I actively rotate powders on purpose.

What's up John!

I'm a huge fan, unfortunately though what you said is right lol. As much as I love reading about bodybuilding and your work, most of us really do know what to do at this point and it's just about being consistent and applying what we know. Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time reading articles/the forum given that I know the majority of what I read. But it does at least keep me motivated :)

That having been said,

1. Do you have any plans for new articles/work for the future?

2. What is your weight/bf% currently at now and how many calories are you eating per day?

3. What were some of your all time best lifts?

4. You asked what topics are of interest. I'm obviously bias towards what I'd like to read but I think it would be interesting to see what you do to get endomorphs really cut without losing significant muscle/strength. I did the GSD last year but after the initial 5lb weight loss I only lost maybe 1/2lb per week and felt smaller. I had already been cutting for awhile at that point so that could have been part of it but I think I had a week of higher calories prior to it.

Thanks

John,

Can you please explain what you dont agree with about the paleo approach?

They say grains/legumes/dairy is harmful each for different reasons. I am a huge Mark Sisson fan from www.marksdailyapple.com and I believe he is a bright guy. I can say the same about Dr. Art Devany. I would love to hear your take on their approach to eating and lifestyle. Thanks for your time.

You mentioned that you take Receptormax intermittenly. When do you take it and do you think it will be beneficial during a cutting phase? Thanks.

Hey JB,

Nice to see you back around these parts.

As for an article suggestion, I recall you were looking for an informal "debate" with Lonnie a few years ago to compare/contrast your thoughts on AT/PW with his ideas in his Temporal Nutrition writings.

Maybe some...oh I don't know, a certain T-Nation author that interviews other authors, could facilitate the debate. I figure you'd need a third party because your schedules would never match.

It would also be fun to read the forum nit-picking over the differences while completing missing the similarities. I need to get my entertainment somehow. :)

Could we please get a breakdown of the super shakes? I already use almond milk (great sub in for milk due to me being lactose intolerant & tired of Lactaid milk) frozen berries, etc. but the fish oil? Just poured straight in on the blend cycle or do you use Flameout, etc.?

I also cycle protein powders but moreso unfortunately due to budget - can't always be on Metabolic Drive & Surge. (DItto on the Muscle MIlk mouthfeel & taste)

Oh, I hope I didn't imply anywhere that I'm anti-paleo. If I did, I apologize.

In many ways, the ideas of the folks who recommend more paleo-type diets and the ideas we share in Precision Nutrition are pretty similar.

What I was stating outright is that douchebags who get on stage and preach a very strict nutritional doctrine, only to get off stage and violate every rule they just preached, should be blasted in the grill.

For a more thorough discussion of my specific ideas on "paleo" type nutrition (and on the type of douchebaggery I mention in the interview), see this article:

I don't really have "cutting" or "bulking" phases any more. So, for me, I have been using it periodically to make sure my insulin sensitivity stays in check.

Once we reach our mid-30s, insulin sensitivity / glucose tolerance starts to dip. So I use things like Receptormax intermittently to (hopefully) control insulin and glucose regulation in my 30-something body.

The interesting thing I found is that my T-levels tripled from taking it. When getting tested, I thought it was a mistake. So I went back to the lab and re-ran my T. Same result. I'm normally around 300 and have been for years. My levels are in the 900 range on this product.

Now, I don't necessarily feel "more manly" or anything. But it's cool knowing my glucose/insulin regulation is looked after AND my T-levels are sufficiently high.
