Tate Talkin' Trash (And Training)

Tate weighs in on machine training, winning the fat-loss war, and selling steroids to gas station clerks.
I enjoyed that, thanks. What especially got my attention was the part about kicking ass knowing you're probably not going to be a world champ. I just got my MRI results - a torn meniscus and a torn ACL. I'm figuring I'll probably never squat over 600 again (but I bet my bench will go through the roof).
It's a nice pick-me-up to read stuff like this from people who have had countless injuries and found ways to get over them.
The Subway story sounds familiar - the girls at Quiznos already start getting my 2 bowls of chili when the see me through the window.

"Dude, I'm thinking about taking steroids." God Damn, this was the story I've been waiting for. I didnt just LMAO, I actually laughed my ass off.
One of the more subtle things about Dave that impresses me is his forearms. Yeah, forearms. They're 'swole' as the saying goes. His (your) forearms look bigger than the other powerlifters out there, and they have what? 20% bf?
Does Mr. Tate do direct forearm work or is that just accumulated size from lifting heavy weights?

Hmm, some good points about machines I never thought of. But you don't *need* them.
one point I want to ask him is that I am under the impression that most people who make any kind of gains on machines are already pretty strong to begin with and/or they do the vast majority of their work with the barbell lifts. Am I right about this?

^ I know your saying 'most' and 'majority' but think here. If person A does nothing but machines then yes he will get stronger and bigger. Even starting from scratch ei: 125 lb Joe Dirt from the Gas Station. But the moment they want to grab a free weight and do a real lift they will be crushed.
Assuming you workout, are you asking permission to not use machines?

I just shot Dave a quick email and he told me:
"I don't do direct forearm work."
Can't get much more blunt than that!
Glad you guys liked the article.

That's hilarious! Dave is a full-circle man.
He goes from talking about the Hot Chick @ Buckle to taking fiber so he can take a dump in the morning.
You're a riot!
Awesome article - thanks for the personal insights as well.
Re-reading the 900 squat now...

As is usual with Dave, he just sent me another email explaining himself...
"I take that back. I rarely did biceps my entire PL career but always did a couple sets of hammer curls on bench days. Nothing over 55 s for sets of 10-12.
I never really thought of it as forearm work - more prehab for bicep tendons."
And I know he uses Fat Gripz, too.

Dave Tate is a Facebook freak. That's why I loved this article so much, because he's been posting how lean he is. I was shocked to see just how lean; he looks great. This is a good read because it lets you into the "real" side of dieting and seeing what it's like to be over 220 and under 7%bf. Great job Nate.

He's got a great point about dieting too.
When you start to think Subway is cheat food you've certainly gone too far. Those subs may get bland after a while (how he can go every day for 16 weeks I'll never know) but they seem to be good food even on a diet. That's without the oil and mayo.

Yeah as always Dave's tips are awesome. Only if we had flat bread and those sort of options at our subways here!! Funny story bout the skinny dude too, he must get attention like that a lot though. All in all great read
