Of course ATG hits your quads, especially the teardrop part. But, if you're not built for it, it can also ruin your knees. Form is very important on the long term. Make sure your shins stay as vertical as possible and your knees go over your feet. If you're not capable of doing this, switch to box squats. I think most people would benefit of doing box squats to parallel in stead of ATG squats.
@Marzouk: Don't ditch the squat already, you're only doing it for 1 year. Go for box squats to parallel, read all articles on T-Nation about good technique. And maybe try using a safety bar. Go for good form and explosiveness from the bottom (dead stop on the box). Do many sets of few reps.
I know why you want to squat better/more. I do ask this though - why? Just for the strength you will receive or body composition? I've squatted like a warrior for a long time and all I got to show for it was a good squat. My legs didn't grow much from them. People can call you a pussy or whatever they want, but leg presses and hack squats will do more for size than squatting every will.
There are more than few on this site that will say the same thing. Front squatting however is a different story.
What do you prefer?
leg press and hack squat are what builds the biggest legs, IMO.
it has been said before, it depends. some people can build HUGE quads from squatting, others, like myself, with 20 plus years of more 500-600lb squats than i can count, have very little quad development.
depends on how you squat, and volume and loading.
i can post vids and pics of Olympic lifters with better quad development than 90% of the people who claim to be "bodybuilders" on this site, and tall they do is squat and front squat, never more than 3 reps a set either.
