flipcollar, a 'topman' is a man who climbs into the rigging, right up to the top, to set and take down the sails. A tall ship is a particular kind of sailing vessel- usually square rigged although a few fore-and-aft sails on a large boat aren't unusual. I haven't done it personally, but I can crew a GP14 dinghy and I've got a reasonably good feel for the tiller.

lots of people on this forum responding are saying basketball players, but in this usa and world superstars competition, 1973-present, i dont think a basketball player even came close to being in the finals.. like all pros, in all sports, they are great at what they do.. how can labron be good at other sports when he practices his sport all day every day???however, there are the exceptions, when put in a competition to perform your best NOT doing your sport, it looks like track athletes win the most..water skier wayne grimdege one year blew everyone away big time in the pullups part of the 10 events.. where were all the strong skilled position football players??track man brian oldfield blew away lou ferrigno in weightlifting...great watching this event back in the 70's.. http://en.wikipedia.org/...wiki/Superstars

Well, I suggest that you take the athletes and measure them in a competition that does not use sports skill. Like no damn swimming, or shooting, or tennis in that "Superstars" comp. And baseball and table tennis, WTF?

For instance, take the something similar to the football combine. Now take players who do not play football.

I would say Lebron would smoke any rugby, soccer, track, wrestling, kung-fu, gymnastics, NASCAR or any other type.

The best pure athletes are in the NBA... or in NFL, particularly WR and TE.

We need to evaluate:

Speed
Strength
Explosiveness
Power
Agility
Quickness
Endurance
Body control/coordination
Body Frame
Etc
Etc

Lebron? Lebron would smoke Adrian Peterson in any of those categories?

What are you smoking?!

That would be like saying would AP smoke Lebron at a NBA skills test.... (something he does not train for).

The argument is kinda impossible seeing how each type of athlete specializes in training for their sport. Hell thats why theyve made it to the top of their sport to begin with. However, I would argue that NFL players are the most well rounded. My rationale isnt' necessarily behind the demands of the NFL. Merely the NFL is the most popular sport (atleast in U.S.) so most gifted athletes would be drawn towards that.

I don't think Lebron could take away the ball from Zidane even if he was allowed to use his hands BUT as far as athletic ability goes he was kind of slow and unexplosive. Figo was like that too.
Generally slow but with sudden small bursts of speed here and there, just enough to leave opponents thinking what the fuck hust happened here.

Zidane is awesome. But when you compare his raw athletic ability, he is probably very good or great in many aspects. Of course coordination he is numero uno. No where near ELITE when you look at it across the board.

Now, his sport specific soccer skill is ELITE. Unbelievable, off the chart when it comes to that. But he is not the raw athlete Lebron is. No where close.

I admit I don't follow rugby. I have a hard time believing that these guys are more athletic then NBA and NFL players. I will take a sample of 10 guys from each league of current and former players:

NBA:

1. MJ: The ideal athlete. There really is no argument.
2. Nate Robinson: Could have been a pro in multiple sports
3. Vince Carter: Watch the vid of him dunking OVER people. Solid player, incredible athlete.
4. Lebron James: Unbelievable combo of size/speed/power.
5. Blake Griffin: Explosiveness personified.
6. Darrell Griffith. Insane old school athlete.
7. D Wade. Quick as a cat.
8. Gerald Green. Pure athlete.
9. Shawn Kemp. Close to 40" vert at 6'10"?????? Unreal.
10. Allen Iverson. Tough as nails. Multisport star that would have been a Michael Vick type if he wanted to.

NFL:

1. Randy Moss: So much talent he had to be given a mercurial attitude to make it fair for his opponents.
2. Jim Brown: Multi-sport star who was basically The Boss at everything he did.
3. Bo Jackson. Bo knows...
4. Calvin Johnson. Possesses every athletic quality in spades. 10/10. (4.3 40, 10.23 100, 11' broad jump, 43" vert @ 6'5" 235 lbs)
5. Hershal Walker. In HS ran near Olympic number in the 100m (10.22) and won state shot put title. Pursued MMA at age 48.
6. Deion Sanders. Football, baseball and track star. Ran a DAMN 4.1 in the 40 at the NFL combine!!! sick.
7. Vernon Davis. Crazy strength- 460 bench/685 squat/355 power clean/ 4.44 40, 40" vert
8. JJ Watt. Refer to previous posts on JJ.
9. Julius Peppers. 3 sport star in HS, played Basketball at NorthCarolina. 6'7", 290 ran the 40 in 4.5 @ 4% body fat. 425 bench.
10. Tony Gonzalez. Future Hall of Famer that MAY have made a NBA practice squad. Solid power forward at Cal.

So rubgy fans, do these guys match up? Name some of your top players as a reference point. Again, I'm not too familiar with the players.

I think pretty much any top-flight male gymnast could outlift and outsprint Lebron. When adjusted for differences in height and arm length, I'd be willing to bet that most male gymnasts have a better vertical leap than Lebron, and most certainly have a better broadjump. Their agility, body control, and relative strength are also FAR above that of Lebron's.

Lebron is an amazing athlete, but male gymnasts are still the quill. They display a far wider range of athletic prowess on a daily basis than Lebron or any other basketball player does. Much more powerful, more explosive, more flexible, more agile, their sport has a higher degree of difficulty, and so on. The only thing going against gymnasts is the fact that most of them aren't that big.

Wait a minute. You're saying an Olympic shotputter and World's Strongest Man competitor was better at Olympic-style lifting than a bodybuilder? You've just turned my world upside down.

Disagree. Gymnasts are just very strong mini-mes who have mastered their body weight. These guys are basically 5'2" and 140 lbs. sure they can do tons of pull ups and dips, but what else's?

Take one of those mini mes and match them with any NFL guy or NBA guy. My money is on the NFLs guys being the most athletic.

Have them do this:

1. 40 yard dash
2. 400m run
3. Endurance run (5k or 10k).
4. Vertical jump
5. Broad jump
6. Shuttle run
7. 225 bench for reps
8. 315 squat for reps
9. Wrestling/grappling contests
10. Obstacle course run

And pick a few more. And no, you can factor in their 5'2" size. This is not a pound-for-pound type of thing. Raw numbers.

And please give me some stories of these guys athletic ability. Did they star in multiple sports? What are their numbers like the ones listed above? Provide names and examples or its BS.

Kevin Durant is a top-2 basketball player in the world, and he can neither bench press 225 for 1, nor squat 315 for 1. Do you really think he can kick ass at a shuttle run? A 40 yard dash? He's too tall to perform well on the shuttle run, and he's not getting off the line fast on a 40. 3 4 and 5 are the only categories that he could even conceivable win in a contest with the 2nd best gymnast in the world.

Raw numbers, KD loses given your criteria, and plenty of other basketball players would as well.

I also think it's a serious mistake to assume top level gymnasts didn't excel in other sports in their teens. Top level athletes in every sport generally played everything in high school. High school baseball certainly has short guys who play well, and so does track. Hell, the starting point guard for my high school team (5A team in Texas, good team) was 5'6.

Take any of those NBA/NFL players and have them do this:
the pummel horse
the parallel bars
the rings
the vault

I'll tell you right now, put a male gymnast into an NFL game and he does a lot better than what any NFL player would do in a gymnastic event.
