If you can find it Havana Club is outstanding. If you want an authentic rum and coke it has to be mixed with coke from outside the US (we can get Mexican coke at Costco here). I've spent a lot of late nights in Spain watching the sun come up to this drink.
Don't quite understand the fascination with Kraken. Personally think it tastes like a cheap pre-mix. Not a huge rum drinker but have had a few. Captain Morgan is OK but I'd prefer a bit more kick to my liquor. The local brand of Bundaberg Rum is my poison if I choose rum over whiskey or vodka.
Also can anyone suggest some good simple drinks to make with rum?
There's a Brazilian kind of mojito-y drink called a Caipirinha made from sugarcane liquor (Cachaca), Brown sugar, lime and crushed ice. But the cachaca can be replaced with white rum if it's not available. There's not too many ingredients to buy for it, but there's still enough flavour variety to get your exotic on.
I think I prefer it to the mojito at least, and it's not too bad if you're looking for a sweet kind of drink that still tastes a lot like rum, sometimes I make one up around the house when I'm listening to 80's music or watching a mushy romance film.
