The 4 Pound Challenge

"For every fifty pounds of body weight, you should eat a pound of vegetables per day. This will optimize your body's pH acid/alkaline balance."

This advice from Dr. Joseph Mercola, the sometimes right-on-the-mark, sometimes kinda wacky doctor of osteopathic medicine I interviewed a few years ago.

For me that would be close to 4 pounds of vegetables per day. Holy crap. Over the years I've gone from a non-vegetable eater to a pretty good vegetables eater, but 4 frickin' pounds?

Now, for the average American, getting even half this much would lead to fat loss (How can you overeat fattening foods when you're consuming that many veggies? There's no room!) improved health, and barring global flu pandemics and/or zombie uprisings, a longer life.

Now, I have questions:

1) Is this overkill?

2) Can I eat enough muscle-building protein and properly-timed carbs on top of all those damn veggies?

3) Should this be eased into so my digestive system doesn't go monkey-nuts?

4) Since I use Superfood, do I really even need to worry about this?

Sure, I have questions and concerns, but I also have a motto: Touch the hot stove.

In other words, I'm just going to friggin' try it.

I'll reply back to this thread and log my experience. Expect come practical info, maybe a rant, maybe some recipes with photos, and a possible poop-report. (You've been warned.)

And hey, join me if you want, and post your thoughts here.

Check the ingredient list and order of ingredients. Remember, they're listed in order of how much is in the product. A lot of veggie burgers are made from beans, and while that's not bad the main goal here is to eat a lot of leafy greens and colorful veggies. Some are also made from grains, soy, etc. so 6 ounces of "veggie patty" may only contain an ounce or two of actual vegetables.

In all seriousness Chris, I do believe that this is yet another case of Mercola's suggestions heading out to the 428 marker in deep center field. As someone who grew up on traditional Mediterranean food, veggies are a huge staple and included in just about every meal (Ever have scrambled eggs with petite peas and baby boiler onions for breakfast? Mmmmmm...), but this recommendation seems a big excessive - even by someone who camps at Whole Foods and insists on only pure organic & unrefined table fare.

To give our fellow readers an idea of what 4 lbs. of veggies* looks like, it goes something like this:

1 bag frozen mixed vegetables
3 cups steamed broccoli
2 sweet or plain potatoes
3 cups whole kernel corn
2 whole medium sized zuchinnis
1 serving squash
5 servings baby spinach
9 serving red leaf lettuce (yow!)
1 large onion
5 cups cut string beans
1/4 head cauliflower
3 cups diced red cabbage

Feeling froggy? Never mind no room for junk food, there will barely be any room for water, air or much of anything else!

But the premise of his message is still great: EAT more damn greenery. But if you eat 2 lbs. a day and supplement correctly, I would say that you are doing just fine.

Lastly, and for those who want to take Mercola's challenge seriously: Eat certified organic vegetables, as the contaminants and pesticides of 4 lbs. a day may be too much to handle in the long run. I could be wrong, but just my two cents.

Good article regardless...it really makes you evaluate how much "good stuff" you should be putting away daily.

- Mike

*In case you are wondering how I know all that stuff weighs roughly 4 lbs, let's just say, as an engineer by trade, that MY food log was a bit too precise over the years...

A nice veggie side dish that I been cooking up almost every day:

Large hand full of sliced mushrooms
Large hand full of sliced red onion
Couple large hand fulls of spinach (I used the frozen and squeezed out the water)
chopped garlic (I like a lot but whatever your heart so desires)
Crushed pepper flakes (See above)
lil olive oil (coconut would prob be better)
Lots of Frank's red hot sauce

Saute garlic and crushed pepper flakes in olive oil. Throw in onions, then mushrooms and saute for a min. Throw in spinach saute alil longer. Deglaze pan with hot sauce scrapping up the "good stuff." This goes great with grilled salmon or tilapia. Enjoy

Report #1:

Coach Dan John has an annoying habit of making a lot of sense.

He said once that if you plan to eat 3 apples a day for a week as part of a fat loss diet (this works for the average person because it keeps them satiated, adds fiber, and replaces bad snacks) then you better have 21 apples in your house come Monday morning.

Well, here I am, Monday morning, planning to eat 4 pounds of veggies today... and only a single not-too-pretty avocado in my house. And that's technically a fruit.

Now, not planning is sort of a semi-unconscious way of admitting that you don't really want to do something. And sure, I was busy all weekend, on the road for a bit, got home late, etc etc, but that's all rationalization when it comes right down to it.

So, I had my fugly avocado with breakfast and now I'm off to buy my vegetables. Maybe that'll get Dan's voice outta my head!

Stay tuned for more reports...

Enjoy paying for 28 pounds of veggies.

Will you continue to use Superfood during this experiment? Also, could you give us a peak into what else you're eating?

I remember reading a while back how Figure Competitor Pauline Nordin eats around 5 pounds of veggies every day.

Report #2:

Fuck. Me.

Here's one day's worth of veggies. Actually a little over 4 pounds. But still. [Edit: pic in thread below]

I went mostly flash frozen (given my late start) and inexpensive. Not exactly perfect farmer's market food fertilized only with Paul Chek's earthy-smelling poo, but it'll do for today.

My tentative plan is bust out the wok and do a lot of flavorful stir-frys.

I do plan to continue using Superfood. Had my serving today already as a matter of fact. After all, even if I'm getting tons of veggies, I'm not getting all the organic exotics and variety that Superfood provides, plus it contains all the goodies in green tea, berries, etc.

Wish me (and my colon) luck.

Oh, and if Miss Nordin has any advice for me, she has my permission to contact me. Or drop in on me. Wearing only her vegetable gardening hat and a big smile. Yeah, I'd allow that.

Report #3:

Anxious to start chipping away at that 4 pound goal, I remembered something Chad Waterbury told me when I hung out with him in Santa Monica. He said that he sometimes blends broccoli into his vanilla protein shakes. Claims you can't taste a thing.

Chad "Hollywood" Waterbury is, quite clearly, full of shit.

No, no, actually he contains far less shit than most people I know. But I could taste the broccoli. But really, not much!

Now, I also used a full half-pound of frozen broc in my shake. And I realized I was out of vanilla Metabolic Drive so I went with chocolate (2 scoops).

And honesty, for a broccoli/chocolate shake, it wasn't bad at all. With a more reasonable amount of greens, say 3-4 ounces, and vanilla protein, I think Chad would be right on: no taste of broccoli at all.

About 3.5 pounds to go.

Now I just need to digest this stuff and get on with my pre-workout nutrition plan... which does NOT involve broccoli.

My dad is an organic vegetable farmer, and I don't know if he eats quite that much. I do know sometimes on delivery days while washing carrots he will put away 2 lbs if he isn't careful. His skin gets a orange glow sometimes even. So is four pounds doable? I think so, but it helps to have two acres of fresh veggies in the back yard!

According to the blog on Dr Beradi's PN site, the average human only eats 3-5 lbs of food a day. SO 4 lbs of veggies could literally not leave room for anything else. Good luck Chris.

Are there any vegetables to steer away from in terms of not being as beneficial nutritionally compared to other vegetables or can you just eat whatever as long as you mix things up?

Another pound down. Half-pound of sugar snap pea stir-fry blend plus half a pound of spinach, mixed with some leftover chipotle turkey sausages. Ate all this at once.

This on top of a two-scoops of Metabolic Drive, a couple of whole eggs and a full pound of meat so far today. Add to that a FINiBAR pre-workout and a Surge Recovery after.

So, my total for veggies is a bit over 1.5 pounds. It's about 4:30PM. Yeah, probably not going to make it. But let's have fun and try anyway, okay?

Someone call the giant freakin' rabbit.

Fresh spinach wilts and condenses when cooked. Thank God. I really should have picked up frozen spinach.
