Overstand sent me this by PM and wanted me to post this here:
I graduated college in December and I've been working for an insurance broker. It's only been a few months and I'm just about ready to shoot myself, so I've been doing research into joining the military.
I looked into OCS first and I've decided I'd rather enlist. My reasons are that I'm young, single and money is not that important to me at this point in my life; I want the adventure and physical challenge. If I went through OCS, I could end up with a MOS that I hate, in which case I'd be no better off than I am now and making quite a bit less money to boot. I could always go through OCS after my first enlistment, and I think there is something to be said for an officer who started as a grunt.
I have it narrowed down to the Marines or Army, where I'd be interested in Recon/Rangers respectively. I've spoken to a recruiter for both and they've assured me it would be no problem to get an Option 40 Ranger contract or a UZ Recon contract. I am currently leaning towards Marine Recon.
So my questions are:
1) Am I crazy for doing this?
2) How can I get in shape? In my avatar pic I'm about 230. I've been dropping weight for the last 2 months and I'm sitting around 205. I plan to continue dropping until I'm around 175 or so.
I can do 100 pushups, 20 pull ups and 100 sit ups, but my run time is not good at all. I've been slowly building up my cardio, but I just quit smoking so I'm starting at practically ground zero. I'm considering dropping weight training all together.
I probably sound like a total dipshit, but if you or any of the guys on here could help me out with a routine to get in shape quickly I would greatly appreciate it. I know Basic + SOI would be about 5 months, do you think that is enough time to get into good enough shape to make Recon? I want to get out of this corporate office as soon as possible, but I don't want to go unless I have a legitimate shot at reaching my goals.
Thank you for reading. Any other advice/insight is greatly appreciated.
He had a follow up of basically a Marine recruiter being a prick about giving him a contract for his chosen MOS (or whatever Marines call it) and giving him the run-around and vacillating between Rangers and Marine Recon.
