He's not just a friend of mine, he's also my "big brother" in my fraternity, which is interesting considering I'm a solid 4 years his elder. If you weren't in a fraternity, the best way I can explain this bond is that it's the same bond I felt with the closest friends I had in boot camp. So I'd appreciate not hearing any negative comments about this, although I don't expect any from this crowd.

He'll be coming in as an Ensign in another 2 years or so, and well, my knowledge on naval tradition is slightly lacking and I wanted to see if there was any specific items a naval officer would particularly love having. Such as a marine officer and a Mameluke sword, although I'd prefer keeping the cost of this far under what those cost.

Any ideas?

i think you can never go wrong with getting a good quality watch, knife, or tactical flashlight.

I agree with this, but that's from a 'boots on the ground' point of view. On a ship... Porn membership?

The supply people will swipe magazines coming through the mail for their own pleasure, better off with a porn DVD, mixtape style. Also get him a ship proof coffee thermos with his name on it. A pen and lots of paper will work, since Ensigns need to take lots of notes when they deploy.
